The Eco-Council works to ensure that the school is an environmentally friendly place for all and that everyone is actively doing their part for the good of the earth. The school is part of the Eco-Schools programme and in June 2024 we achieved the Green Flag and the status of being an Eco-friendly school.
We aim to achieve the Green Flag again in June 2026. We have undertaken an Environmental Review of the whole school and put together an Action Plan for the year.
We are currently working on:
Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel to School
Thank you to everyone for making a real effort to have an active start to their mornings by walking and scooting to school. Well done to Primary 1 and 2 who had the most journeys.

Outdoor Learning across St. Martin's
At St. Martin's we understand the importance and benefits of getting the children outside into the fresh air. Outdoor Learning in simplest terms means leaving the classroom and going outside to facilitate learning. This learning could be any area of the curriculum. Going outside does not always have to be about nature studies or physical education but can complement any lesson; literacy, numeracy, STEM topics and even ITC. It can also encourage better problem solving, critical thinking, inquiry
skills and self-management in pupils.
Outdoor learning has many benefits including:
Learning - enhances cognition, enquiry skills and personal
development
Environment - increases knowledge and personal connection to nature
Health - benefits mental health and physical literacy
As outdoor learning is one of minor topics in our 2024-2026 action plan we have been encouraging each class to get outside as part of their lessons as much as possible.
